Today was a long day beginning with the ancient ruins at Ephesus. Ephesus was where Paul began his preaching. The city was a port town with an extremely vibrant life style. Such a bustling city must have been an extremely daunting challenge for Paul. He certainly upset the powers there.
We think that Paul spoke in this great stadium which seats some 24,000We also visited the Church of Mary, an extensive church dedicated to our Lady in the Ephesus ruins. This church was built much later when Ephesus was a Christian city. Bishop Anthony shared the Word with us and explained how the first council of bishops in the early Christian world gathered at Ephesus to establish the theology and belief about Mary.
From Ephesus we then visited the Byzantine Basilica of St John perched high above the town and mosque.
St John was buried here but his remains were eventually relocated to Rome.
And we ended our day at the House of Mary. This was the house that St John took Mary to sometime after the resurrection to keep her safe. We celebrated mass here right next to the house. It was an incredibly deep and moving experience.
