We hit the sight seeing trail early today as Pompeii is south of Rome just outside Napoli.we caught the Regionale train that took about 2 hours 20 going down. From Napoli Centrale we the took the Scavi train to Pompeii. Now that's a train that most Romans probably wouldn't enjoy and neither did we. The train was very crowded and the loud American yelling to move down didn't help things. Add then a pretentious Italian guy who seemed to enjoy arguing with everyone including an old woman and as an added bonus a BO smell that would resurrect dead Pompeiian! What a great train trip of some 20 stations. We did finally get a seat inside and the wafts of poo poo added extra fragrance to the already long journey! Anyway Pompeii is a remarkable place - buried under ash and cinder some 2000 years ago. The city was excavated and life isn't hard to imagine as you walk the streets and go through the many houses and shops.
A body cast of a perished young boy and an adult.
A few of the original frescoes and wall art remain.
Many wheel ruts of chariots are easily visible. The large stone slabs were for pedestrians to cross without stepping into street muck and also as a means of slowing down chariots.
A chained dog mosaic.

I couldn't believe that we were allowed to walk all over this house's mosaiced floors!!
While in one street I hear "Attila?" I turn to find Kathy Ferrari! What a small world!
The small white stones in the road way helped navigate at night time.

All in all it was a bit of a rush and really not the easiest day trip because of the 6 hours of travel time but what an experience.
