Beautiful tile work out front.
Today, our last full day in Roma, we decided to trip out to Tivoli. The Villa d'Este is in Tivoli. The estate is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site and it is a fine example of Renaissance architecture and the Italian Renaissance garden. We rode the Metro to Mammolo and then caught the crowded local bus to Tivoli. It's quite a ways especially with the morning traffic. By the time we start to climb the mountains, the view becomes worthwhile.
The entrance to Villa d'este on the right of the church.
The courtyard.
A ceiling fresco inside the Villa.
But it's the gardens that we've really come to see. The villa itself is exquisite with frescoes floor to ceiling in most rooms but we want to take in the magnificent gardens and especially the hundreds of fountains - all powered by gravity and without any pumps - incredible!
There are many varieties of lemons here. This one has tiny leaves only about 2 cm in length.![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2Vtm7B_ldtnAnFYcJuPehljDUej23BfvuyGUDaSVZBZSSbHPWM6uCm5TtWIUx2YgIA4b-FzuDxhCmKG2D1uPi83MbwUhMeAbLJq9OEMaIc0vzUQrnYpmxM3aO1JPJlxTwCEK-MBk05YgY/s500/2010%2525205%25253A44%252520PM.jpg)
The 100 Fountains ( actually more than 100) the gargoyles are amazing on the bottom level. Each gargoyle is different.
The water powered organ was inside this grand fountain.
For the home trip we decided to give the bus the flick and get the Regionale trend ack to Tiburtina. We basically had the entire carriage to ourselves. The trip was much more leisurely not to mention faster. We had a great cappuccino thick shake from the station. Very refreshing even though the signorina who served us was on her mobile the whole time. The views of Tivoli were great on the trip home as well.
