Orvieto

Just 100 km outside Rome in the Umbria region is a walled town called Orvieto. This town is perched high on a stone bluff and dates back thousands of years to Etruscan times. Most buildings here date from 1000 to 1500 AD it's an absolutely stunning town.

We caught the train out and then the funicular up the mountain. It's then just a short walk through amazing narrow streets with postcard views everywhere. It's an amazing change from the hustle and bustle of Rome - you can feel the serenity!
There's numerous churches but the crowning glory is the Cathedral. It's unique in that you won't see another like this anywhere in Italy!
Creation seen outside main doors.
Close up of some of the mosaic work outside.
The floors are polished marble and some windows have translucent marble panels. The baptismal font is shown - bottom left.
Morning tea was in this beautiful little restaurant in the Piazza Duomo - the fare was very appropriate!

Views the the valleys below are stunning!

We did an underground city tour which allows you to see where wells were dug, cellars of family homes, olive presses and pigeon holes where pigeons were raised for food.

Each little street offered classic picturesque views.

This church dedicated to St Andrew is in the Piazza Republica

Most restaurants and cages serve porchetta (wild boar) and truffles - both the local delicacies.

What a boar! but it's not me!
